She’ll lock herself in her room, a prison of choice
In a deep, damp fog that covers her voice
Because obviously you can’t hear it, the tears gone unseen
Her views on life, love, childish and obscene
She just doesn’t understand, yeah keep telling yourself that
Until you find her on your floor, covered in red and eyes black

So was it worth it?
You turned away from her sorrow, it’s just a phase she’ll get through it
Was it worth it when you found out so suddenly
That a funeral would paint over where a sweet sixteen should be?

He cries alone in a mansion of his own
More than any child could dream of, all his, everything he’s known
A life of doctors and intelligence, towering high above all
But in his ice-cracked empty chest his dreams do nothing but fall

So was it worth it?
The education you gave so he’ll be just like you
Stuck up and stubborn, but no big news
When all he wanted was your love and a chance
To be himself, now showered in a bloodstained romance
Is this worth it?

Instead of yelling, stitch your words shut and listen
Maybe you’ll finally find out what that last puzzle was missing
They didn’t need money, they didn’t need praise, they didn’t need perfection or a cookie-cutter face
They needed identity, love that wasn’t mandatory , just a smile for once
Was it worth it?
Were the lies all perfect?
Or are you still laughing at their childish phase as you stand in the rain at their hand-me-down grave?
